Dog Breeds Starting With A to E

Dog Breeds Starting With A - E

Here we take a look at some of the popular Dog Breeds Starting With A - E - Afghan Hounds, Border Collies, Cocker Spaniels, Dalmatians and English Bulldogs

Afghan Hound

Dogs - Afghan Hounds

Elegant and unique, this ancient dog breed is thought to date back to the pre-Christian era. The Afghan Hound was first used to hunt prey in the mountain and desert regions of Afghanistan, where his ability to run and long coat were useful to both chase prey and fend off the cold.

Most people would describe this sighthound as independent, aloof and even a little comical at times. Amusing and even sometimes mischievous, these dogs are often known as the ‘clowns’ of the family! Due to his independent nature, training can prove challenging, especially with his natural prey drive.

With his lengthy, luxurious coat, grooming is essential for any owner who doesn’t want to deal with a huge, tangled mess of fur!

Border Collie

Born in a misty place called Northumberland, on the very border of England and Scotland, the Border Collie is arguably one of the most, if not the most, intelligent domestic dog breed in existence today. Like some other highly intelligent breeds, the Border Collie was bred around the early 1900’s for herding purposes, though this fellow is said to have been centuries in the making.

Thanks to their impressive intellect, Border Collies are easily trainable and catch on to new tasks quickly. These guys are born to run, with an energy to match and a focus that can be just as difficult to break. Many owners report their Border Collies nipping at the heels of small children or other animals in a misplaced effort to herd. All in all, Border Collies are usually great with children and very playful dogs!

They’re prone to some minor health problems, specifically issues like Retinal Atrophy, hypothyroidism, and Canine Hip Dysplasia (although the risk can be lessened by maintaining a healthy weight). Being a high energy breed, nutrient requirements are higher than average, but maintaining a healthy weight is important.

Grooming every 4-8 weeks is recommended. Border Collie’s have thick, double coats, and shed often; be prepared for a lot of dog fur!

In the end, the Border Collie is the dog of choice for the family man who prizes intelligence and trainability!

More information on Border Collies

Cocker Spaniel

Breed All About It - Dog Breeds starting With C - Cocker Spaniel

Gentle, playful, and always eager to hunt or swim, the Cocker Spaniel is a gun (bird) dog, belonging to the sporting group. This fellow’s cheerful, upbeat personality always ensures he is a pleasure to have around the family, great with children and happy to cuddle.

Cocker Spaniels are descended from various types of English Spaniels, recognized as their own separate breed by the American Kennel Club in 1878. By the mid 1900’s, American hunters found the breed extremely useful for flushing game, although the breed became popular even in the early 1900’s.

For half a century the breed held the number one spot with the American Kennel Club, until ‘puppy mills’ began irresponsible mass breeding, promoting health complications and personality issues, thus diminishing his fame. Some of the more serious problems this breed may encounter include retinal atrophy, cataracts, and/or glaucoma

Grooming the Cocker Spaniel’s significantly long coat regularly is absolutely a must for maintaining a luxurious mane rather than a tangled mass. The show trim for this breed differs from everyday grooming practices for the avg. owner; owners of non-show spaniels may choose to have the coat shortened for easy maintenance. Both under and outer coats must be brushed to avoid matting complications.

Dalmatian

Originally used to guard the carriages and horses of the upper class in the 1800"s, today’s Dalmatian is a very versatile and energetic dog! Whether it be watching over house and livestock, performing impressive agility tricks, or participating in family activities, the Dalmatian is a joy to be around!

Dalmations are rowdy and energetic by nature, happily willing to jump on company in greeting. Due to their high energy requirements, apartment living isn’t ideal; dalmatians need lots of space to frolic and play in. After the Disney movie ‘101 Dalmatians’, breed popularity exploded!

Like most breeds, Dalmatians are more prone to some disorders than others. Deafness, allergies and urinary stones can be especially problematic with these dogs. If socialized well, they should get along great with other people and animals; Dalmations love attention and have a strong desire to please!

Weekly brushing of the smooth, dense coat is recommended. Dalmatians not only shed often, but their stiff hairs can be difficult to remove from clothing and fabric. Regular brushing helps remove those stray hairs before they are given the opportunity to become problematic.

English Bulldog

Dog Breeds starting With E - English Bulldog

Although it is subject to argument, most believe the English Bulldog was first bred in the 13th century (possibly 15th), from a coupling of Mastiffs and Pugs to both guard and control cattle, as well as participate in the violent sport of Bull Baiting.

Their entire body was designed for this purpose. These early Bulldogs were powerful, literally able to ‘swing’ from a bull’s face as it thrashed about. The wrinkles of their face provided channels for blood to flow away from the eyes. The loose skin of their body helped them shrug off glancing blows. They had an extremely high pain threshold, some say almost not able to feel pain at all. Even the Bulldog’s jaw structure helped him latch on to his opponent.

It wasn’t until 1835 that Bull-baiting was deemed cruel and outlawed, unfortunately leading to equally violent competition- pit fighting. The breed came to America along with immigration at the turn of the century, soon giving rise to a new breed- the Pit Bull.

Note: Contrary to popular belief, these first Pit Bulls were specifically bred for their ‘bite inhibition’ and loyalty toward human owners, as opposed to strict violence like many would have you believe.

The Bulldog suffers from a plethora of possible health concerns, prevalent among them major respiratory problems, overheating, severe skin allergies, eczema, dry skin, acne, degenerative spine disease, cherry eye, hip dysplasia, and joint & ligament injuries. Bulldog owners should prepare for the possibility of investing in their pet’s healthcare!

3 Ways To Get Fit With Your Dog

Check out some of the many ways to get fit with your dog. There are lots of fun and easy ideas to improve both your health and theirs.

Get fit with your dog

Getting a dog is great for your health for many reasons. The most obvious reason is that they help you to be more active however they also been proven to help relieve stress, to help their owners become more social and even to help people with rheumatoid arthritis, ADHD and cancer. Have a look at our suggestions below to get you started on the path to better health with your dog.

get fit with your dog

1. Walking and Running

Probably the most obvious way to get fit with your dog is walking and running. Dogs need a lot of exercise and particularly young dogs can put their owners through their paces. You will notice a big benefit to your fitness with daily dog walks and plenty of ball throwing. If you"re looking to increase this work out then you can take to running with your dog. Of course make sure to take into account your fitness and theirs before speeding off.

If you really take to running, walking or jogging with your dog then you can take this to the next level. Cani-cross is a form of cross-country running in which runners are attached to their dog or dogs - much like a human version of sledding or mushing - and then they run a cross country race. This originated in Europe as a summer alternative for the sledding communities. Today is wide-spread and increasing in popularity all the time. There are cani-cross events held all over the United Kingdom and Europe. These events cover anything from 1 mile to 28 miles and so whether you"e a beginner or a fanatic there"s something for you and your pooch.

2. Swimming

Swimming is another fun way to get fit with your dog. Of course not everywhere allows canines in their waters so do a bit of research beforehand, but more and more places that are dog-friendly are popping up all over the place. From rivers and beaches to public swimming pools you are sure to find somewhere nearby for you and your pooch to have a dip. Swimming is very good exercise for both dog and owner however there are some precautions to take.

Firstly, not all dogs can swim. Generally large dogs such as labradors and golden retrievers can take the water. Whilst bulldog, basset hounds and others dogs with short legs cannot swim at all. Even if you"re dog can swim you may want to invest in a life vest. Also if swimming in the summer keep an eye out for heatstroke. Do not despair at all the rules if you"re careful swimming with your dog can be very fun.

3. Cycling

Cycling with your pooch is a great way to get fit with your dog if you have a larger breed. The dog needs to be able to run fast enough to keep up with you. Aside from all the usual gear that you need for cycling there are few extra bits and pieces you will want for you dog. Firstly if you"re cycling on roads or public walkways it is highly important to have a safe leash for your dog. Holding the leash in your hand can prove to be very dangerous and distracting. There are plenty of shops that sell special leads that attach to your bike handles. Secondly a high visibility vest for your dog is a good idea.

Aside from this just use common sense and caution. Don"t take your dog on a marathon bike ride on their first attempt. Once you"ve got the hang of it bike riding with your dog can be fun and very freeing for both of you. If you really get into it you can even try your hand at bikejoring. This is a lot like cani-cross that we talked about above. In this case your dog and dogs are attached in front of you and you will use their momentum to increase your own speed. Bikejoring events take place all over the United Kingdom if you want to meet like-minded people and add a competitive element to your workout.

5 Delicious Dog Treats You Should Make This Summer

Check out our selection of ideas and recipes for tasty summer dog treats to make your four-legged friend happy on a hot summer"s day!

Dog Treats for the Summer

When you"re enjoying a nice ice cream or a cold beer on a hot summer"s day what about your pooch? It seems unfair when they must be content with a cold bowl of water. Well, this no longer the case. Today there are a lot of ideas out there for summer dog treats that are both tasty and refreshing for your pup. And you need look no further, below we"ve listed a few of our favourites.

1. Dog Ice Lollies

Dog Ice Lollies, or Pupsicles, are a great way to give your dog a cooling and delicious dog treat that they will love. Plus they are very easy to make. Simply make a beef or chicken stock and pour into an empty ice tray. Then put the ice tray in the freezer and wait until frozen. For an added treat you can even add some chopped pieces of meat, dog food or dog biscuits before putting the tray in the freezer. Serve when entirely frozen much like you would an ice lolly.

2. Dog Ice Cream

Another nice and cooling treat which dogs love is ice cream. However, the kind of ice cream humans eat can be very bad for dogs and so this summer why not make your four legged friend his own special dog treat? It is very simple to make dog ice cream and you can add lots of different flavours and toppings. The simplest recipe is strawberry ice cream. Mix strawberries and yoghurt in a blender and freeze overnight. If you want something a bit more exciting then try banana, peanut butter, honey and yoghurt ice cream. Mash the banana first and warm the peanut butter and then blend all the ingredients and freeze overnight. For an added bonus add bacon sprinkles on top when serving.

3. Cheeseburger Ice Cubes

Cheeseburger ice cubes really do what they say on the tin. They are surprisingly easy to make and will go down a real storm with your dog. To begin get an empty ice cube tray: don"t use your favourite tray as you probably wont be using this again or at least not to make ice in. Then take some cooked ground beef (crumbled up left over burger will do) and put a little bit into each section of the tray. On top of this add a couple of pieces of grated cheese (this step is optional) and finish by filling each section with chicken stock. Put in the freezer and serve when frozen.

4. Peanut butter and bacon dog biscuits

Now we"ll admit that these dog treats are not actually specifically for summer but they are such a winner with furry friends that we felt we had to include them in this list. It is a little bit more complicated than the other recipes but definitely worth it. Add equal measures of peanut butter and water to an egg and a tablespoon of honey. The add chopped pieces of bacon and some shredded carrot. Once you"ve mixed these together take four times the amount of flour and roll the mixture into a dough form. Then simply cut or roll into biscuit shapes and bake for about half an hour. These can be eaten straight away - once they"ve cooled down of course - or frozen and saved for a later date if you"re dog can bear the wait!

5. Banana and Honey Dog Treats

Another dog biscuit recipe that you"re dog will love is banana and honey dog treats and these too can be enjoyed all year round. To make simply mix mashed bananas, water, vanilla extract, egg and honey in a bowl. When these are combined add wholemeal flower and baking powder. Mix again. Then roll out the dough and make into biscuit shapes. Bake in the oven for around 30 minutes or until starting to go golden brown at the edges. Turn off the oven but leave the biscuits inside for another 40 minutes to ensure they get the desired brittle texture. Once this is done remove from the oven and allow to cool fully before serving to your four-legged friend.

Breed All About It - Dog Breeds starting With H - Harrier

Dog Breeds starting With H - Harrier

Top 10 Amazing Facts About Harrier Dogs - Harrier Puppies

The top 10 amazing facts about Harrier dogs - pros and cons. Harriers sometimes are described as Beagles on steroids. These lively, active scent hounds were originally bred to hunt hares and foxes in large packs, but they also are wonderful family companions.

Don"t expect to find one in your neighborhood. However they are one of the rarest breeds registered with the American Kennel Club. In 1994, for example, there were only four Harrier litters born in the entire United States resulting in only 31 puppies.

Built to work, Harriers have lots of bone and substance for their size. Their muzzles are along with a well-developed nose and open nostrils. Their eyes are dark, alert and intelligent.

Speed is not as important as stamina for these dogs. Hares and foxes have been known to drop from exhaustion after being pursued by a relentless pack of Harriers. Harriers have long dropped ears and their feet have big pads that enable them to run for hours through rough terrain.

They have broad chests to provide lots of room for their hearts and lungs. Their tails are set high and carried upright not curled over their backs making it easier for hunters to see them from a distance or on thick brush.

Harriers have a playful outgoing personality. They are not quite as outgoing as the Beagle, but they definitely love to be around people and other animals. They generally are sweet, tempered and tolerant of children.

You should watch them however around pets that aren"t dogs; because they are packed dogs they generally get along well with other dogs but may see cats, hamsters and other non-canine pets as prey. They like to live in a pack whether the pack is made up of other dogs or people.

You should always keep in mind that your Harrier is an active dog who likes to explore and track. Some like to bay a loud prolonged bark. You should have a well-secured fence your dog can"t jump over or crawl under. And when you take your Harrier to unsecured areas such as a park be sure to keep him on leash, otherwise he may take off, chasing a squirrel or a rabbit.

Also remember that harriers were bred to have a lot of energy and stamina as well as to think for themselves. They are independent and tireless hunters. These traits while good for hunting may present difficulties in training. You"ll need to provide them with enough exercise to keep them from becoming bored and destructive. These are dogs who love to be with you, but do not demand attention. They are capable of entertaining themselves. Your job is to make sure that their idea of entertainment doesn"t mean getting into mischief.

Because they are independent thinkers who can sometimes be stubborn you should strongly consider obedience training for your Harrier. Because these dogs have great stamina and are energetic without being hyperactive they do well in performance sports such as agility and rally. They also make great jogging, bicycling and hiking companions.

Although they are relatively inactive in the house they are not recommended for apartment dwellers unless you are willing to provide them with a great deal of outside exercise every day. Harriers make good watchdogs because they will alert you to any strange noises of visitors to your home. However don"t expect them to be guard dogs. They are so friendly that they often greet strangers as though they were old friends.

Although they are sweet even-tempered dogs Harriers are not recommended for first-time dog owners because of their training and exercise needs. Health, Harriers are generally healthy but like all breeds they"re prone to certain health conditions. Not all Harriers will get any or all of these diseases, but it"s important to be aware of them if you"re considering this breed.

Hip dysplasia, this is an inherited condition in which the thigh bone doesn"t fit snugly into the hip joint.

Dogs Pet Shop - Dog Gadgets - Go Bone: Keeping Your Dog Engaged And Happy

Go Bone: Keeping Your Dog Engaged And Happy

If you have a hectic job where you must put in 40 or even a lot more hours per week, you must be worried about your dog and how you are unable to entertain him and spend enough time with him? Does it hurt to leave him alone and see him dulled or bored throughout the day because you are busy? If so, then choosing Go Bone is going to be a commendable idea for you. The world’s first smart bone entertains your dog automatically while you focus on your daily tasks.

How Does It Work?

The Go Bone is manufactured in a fashion that there is a small hollow space inside the wheels. It can be used for you to place some food or a treat for your dog. This is, however, optional and you may not want to serve the treat via the Go Bone and use your traditional methodologies for that if you want to. In order to activate the Go Bone, all you have to do is gently tap it with your finger. Once activated, the intelligent software will keep your dog entertained automatically for a while. Thanks to the built-in wheels, the artificial bone moves around making your dog chase it and keeps him busy while you attend to your daily chores. What’s more is that the features are not confined to the automation. Once you are done with the tasks, you can conveniently be a part of the play and take full control of the Go Bone via a smartphone application.

Benefits:

There is no argument over the fact that the benefits associated with opting for Go Bone are numerous. To begin with, it fills your day with peace of mind since you know that your dog is being entertained and is happy. The ability to take control of the Go Bone via an app ensures that you won’t be left out when you have the time to play with your dog. One of the most prominent features of Go Bone includes its customizability on the basis of your dog’s breed, age, size, weight, or even his play preferences or styles in order to keep him busy for an extended period of time. Go Bone offers a more convenient alternative to keeping your dog regularly exercised than having to take him on a walk every evening. Any part that has been extensively in contact with your dog can be easily removed for cleaning purposes or perhaps for replacement in the first place. Last but not the least, there’s a unique bonding mode that Go Bone offers which is primarily focused on making the timidest dogs actively engaged and loving the activity with the passage of time.

It is evident from the information mentioned above that there are numberless reasons why Go Bone, a Kickstarter project, is receiving a huge amount of funding for its implementation. Rest assured, the creative product makes the lives of dog lovers a lot easier than it used to be. Sure, it may seem to be a little on the costlier side for some of you, but consider the benefits and you’ll begin to realize how worthwhile the product really is.

You And Your Puppy- Puppies & Children - Part 7_11

Carolyn: So Elena, she is the most beautiful Chocolate Labrador puppy. What"s her name?

Elena: Coco.

Carolyn: She is just stunning.

Elena: So are there any basic rules that me and my kids can follow easily?

Carolyn: How old are the kids?

Elena: Four and six.

Carolyn: Well, lots of people think that puppies and children just automatically get on. But they don"t. They"ve got to be taught to like each other. For puppies, children are really unpredictable and noisy and children don"t always understand puppy language either and why should they. So there are a few rules that you have to make sure they stick to. Eating is a big one. So if the puppy"s eating, the children have to know not to disturb the puppy when she"s got food. If she does anything that she"s not meant to do, so if she gets hold of their toys or if she"s on the sofa or anything like that then they have to come and get you. They shouldn"t go and interrupt themselves, they have to come and get you. And the same as if she"s sleeping, if she"s in her bed they know not to wake her up. Because dogs can wake up a bit grumpy just the same as we can.

Now when the children are eating, once again it"s better if Coco"s in her crate or just out of the way a little bit. First of all because you would be amazed at how much food children could sneak onto to the table to puppies.

Elena: Okay.

Carolyn: It teaches them to beg at the table and also just teaches them to just grab food from children, so it"s always easier if when people are eating, she goes in her crate and she has a nice treat when she"s in there as well. If they"re playing rough games and running around and the puppy needs to go into the crate, because she would play with them the same way if she would play with her little mates which is all teeth and bitey which you obviously don"t want to encourage.

The other thing and it"s probably the number one rule and it sounds a bit mean, but never leave a puppy and your children alone together. That goes with all dogs. Because dogs don"t always understand children very well, because they run around and they play and they"re noisy. And also children don"t understand dogs very well. They don"t know when they"re being warned to stay away and it"s just safer for everybody and fair on everyone if they don"t get left alone together.

That doesn"t mean that you can"t have fun together though. You can still get out, get the children involved in walking and to a little bit of training, as long as they know to drop the treats on the floor so that the puppy doesn"t come up to grab things from their hands. But all the time just encourage that bond, encourage that relationship through having fun and that go on really well together. She"s so gorgeous.

Elena: Thanks so much. I really can"t wait to try some of this.

The 5 Best Dog Walks in Torquay: Dog friendly guide to Torquay

What can Fido, or Filly or Fred expect when they hit Torquay or Torbay. What new smells, doggy encounters and new experiences can they expect? Below we discuss some of the best dog walks in Torquay, including some great dog friendly beaches.

Torquay is part of Torbay and in South West Devon. Torquay is the most northerly of the three towns but all interlinked. The other two towns heading south are Paignton, then Brixham.
Dog walks around Torquay, therefore, can encompass three towns and a few more north of Torquay, namely Babbacombe and then on to Maidencombe and Shaldon. Babbacombe and St. Marychurch is just in the Torquay district so we can start here and work south.

These 5 places for dog walking and canine fun are mostly coastal based but cover beach, woods, parks and peninsulas.

Babbacombe & Oddicombe Beach

Babbacombe is famous for its funicular railway which heads from the downs to Oddicombe beach. This is a 2-minute journey, but we would recommend the steep access road that wind through the woods. It"s fairly secluded and a great dog friendly beach in Torquay.

Once at Oddicombe beach, which is large and sand/shingle, you can let your dog play in the winter months, but in the summer you will need to head right and go to the smaller Babbacombe beach but next to the Cary Arms and the small café which does great bacon sandwiches.

Next head up past the Cary Arms and follow the coastal footpath up into the woods (don’t go more than 50 yards up the main road before you head left).

Cary Arms Dog Walk

Walls Hill

This path will take you to the top of the headland calls Walls Hill a well-known ancient archaeological site. These rolling downs lead to the headland overlooking Lyme Bay. Follow the coast around and you will come into a woodland path leading down to Anstey’s cove. This is a steep walk down and has a café but limited dog opportunities. Instead continue along the coastal path (“Bishops Walk”), which leads to Ilsham road.

This walk is about a mile and a half and is through woods overlooking Lyme Bay. This is great for dogs to run through the woods. There are plenty of fox and badger trails and sometimes deer too. On a good day you can see dolphins to the left and plenty of wildlife to the right!

Hopes Nose & Thatcher Park/Green

Once you hit Ilsham road, cross over and go up the hill around the corner and follow the path alongside and above the road to Hopes Nose. This is found at the end of the path and across the road and over a stile. Hope Nose is a favourite fisherman’s spot, but the best dog walking, view and experience are found by heading right once you hit the level after a bout 150 yards downhill. It’s a climb up and down but well worth it. You are then looking across Torbay to Berry Head and Brixham.

Moving on from Hopes Nose and coming back up the hill, turn left after the stile and follow down the road to a green on the left overlooking Thatcher Rock. This green, park and garden lead down to Thatcher point. The coastal paths winds alongside the park and back onto the main road.

From here you will need to follow the road for about ½ mile down to Meadfoot beach. The north end has lots more rocks, but a good stretch of beach and the south end more beach and a combination of sand and shingle. Depending on the state of the tide you can let your dog roam both beaches in the winter but only the North beach in the spring and summer.

Car Travel With Dogs: The Ultimate Dog Friendly Road Trip Guide

With the nicer weather approaching, spring fever is in the air. Your dog has likely been cooped up with you all winter waiting for the winter freeze to start thawing. It is time to gas up the car, roll down the windows and go for a road trip! If you want this to be an epic adventure with your best furry friend, follow this ultimate dog friendly road trip guide. If you plan this trip properly, there will be no reason to turn back!

Travel Preparation -  Car Travel With Dogs

If you are tempted to hop in the car and let the wind take you and your dog wherever it wants, think twice. Preparing for a dog friendly road trip is the key to a pleasant trip and a happy dog. If you head out without considering the following things, you and your dog might be home before the fun ever started.

Medical Records

Perhaps the least exciting part of your road trip will be getting your dog’s medical records in order. Stop by the veterinarian and ask for a few copies, just in case. These are essential in case your dog falls ill while on holiday, or if you need to board your dog for a day or two while you are away. While you are at the vet, make sure your dog is up to date on all vaccinations.

Emergency Vet Contact Info

Bring the contact info of the 24-hour emergency vet clinic in the town you will be traveling too. Dog"s are unpredictable, and if they get sick in the middle of the night, you need to know where to take them.

Get Dog Familiar With Car

Spend a few weeks before your adventure letting your dog adjust to the car. Several short trips in the car should do the trick. Your dog will learn to love the car especially if they associate the car with a trip to the dog park or a doggie play date.

Pet Restraints

Make a plan for how your dog will be kept safe in the car during your road trip. Car travel with dogs can be dangerous with a rambunctious dog that is overly excited for the adventure ahead. Even the calmest dogs can get very hyper when they spend extended periods of time trapped in a car. Vehicle pet barriers, pet seat belts, pet car seats, and pet travel crates are all excellent ways to keep your pet (and you) safe when traveling in your vehicle. This chart by Dr. Foster and Sr. Smith is a great resource for deciding what type of pet restraint is right for your pet.

Take the time to read about Paws to Click. This organization helps raise awareness of the danger of traveling with unrestrained pets and how one click helps protect you and your family. They report that every 18 minutes an accident occurs due to a loose pet in a vehicle.dog friendly road trip guidePacking Essentials

Your dog will need their daily necessities such as their leash, collar, toys, medications, special toys, and beds. Bring extra food just in case you run out, or your dog accidentally eats it all during a holiday mishap. Don"t assume that your dog"s food will be available at your destination, as many brands of dog food are only sold regionally. Changing your dog"s food during a holiday is not a good idea as the dog is already going through enough change. Having abundant water and collapsible water bowls will also make car travel with your dog much more pleasant. And don"t forget the disposable dog waste bags – aka poopie bags. Have these stashed in a few places in case of an emergency.

Map Your Route

Be extra diligent about knowing the directions to where you are going and plan ahead for bathroom and exercise breaks. Print or write out the directions in case your GPS decides to malfunction, or your phone loses its charge.

Temporary Pet ID Tag

Get a tag made that indicates the local address where you will be staying. Include the local phone number, and your cell phone number in case cell service is choppy. Also, have photos of your dog printed out and on your phone, in case they run off during all the hustle and bustle that a new destination offers.

Book Dog Friendly Accommodations

Before you drive off into the sunset, book a dog friendly hotel or cottage on the way. If your road trip includes many long days riding in the car, you will need a place to sleep at night. Call ahead to reserve your room as many hotels only have a certain amount of room dedicated to pets. Ask for the name of the person you book the room with, just in case there is any confusion when you and your dog check into the hotel.

Get a Weather Report

Weather is something to consider when traveling in the car with your dog. Pack extra towels in the car to dry off a wet dog at bathroom breaks, in the case of rain. Purchasing a waterproof seat liner will be useful in rainy conditions and will protect your seats. If cool weather predicted, a doggie sweater might be necessary to keep your pet comfortable. If you are traveling to a sunny destination, a new outfit is a must. This Sunshine Chevron Dog Dress, from Spoiled Sweet Pets, is perfect for the warmer months ahead.

Exercise Your Dog

Help your dog burn off extra energy before the long car trip ahead. A log game of fetch or a nice run together around town will do wonders to help your dog settle into his crate, car seat or seat belt.

On the Road - Car Travel With Dogs

It"s time to pump up the music and hit the open road! After you gas up your car and get your human and pet snacks organized the following tips are important to remember:

No Head Out The Window

Although tempting and adorable in photos, this is a bad idea. Flying debris can easily injure your dog. Also, NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some areas now have laws restricting such transport. It is always dangerous and should be avoided at all cost.

Never Leave Your Dog Alone

A pet in a car is never a good idea. Temperatures in cars ride quickly. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, “a study performed by the Louisiana Office of Public Health, found that the temperatures in a dark sedan as well as a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but partly cloudy day, exceeded 125oF within 20 minutes." This is proof enough that leaving your pet in the car can easily lead to illness and even death. Cracking the windows makes little difference,

Also, leaving your pet in the car gives an open invitation for thieves to steal your precious pooch.

Limit Food Intake

Resist the temptation to pass your dog back some of your road trip food. Dogs should only eat small amounts of their regular food during travel as some dogs become anxious while in a car. An upset belly is not the way to have a dog friendly road trip.

Proper Hydration

When you stop for bathroom breaks offer water or ice cubes to your dog, so they don"t become dehydrated. Small amounts of water will also ease an upset belly if your dog is anxious while traveling. Some people bring plastic jugs of water from home as water in new towns and cities sometimes upsets their dog’s tummy. This is a good tip to take into consideration if your dog has a sensitive stomach.

Take Frequent Bathroom Breaks

Dogs should not travel longer than 4 hours in the car without water and exercise. Research the roads you will be on and find towns that have dog parks for your breaks. Many rest areas along highways now have small dogs park, which is super convenient when planning a dog friendly road trip.

Open The Windows

If the weather is beautiful, your dog will appreciate some fresh air. Open the windows as often as possible and enjoy the benefits that fresh air has to offer you and your dog.

When You Arrive At Your Destination - Car Travel With Dogs

Exercise

Congratulations. You have arrived safely at your destination. Car travel with your dog isn’t so bad after all, is it? The first thing to do is give your dog a great walk. Play some fetch, give him some treats and reward him for the excellent job he did traveling in the car.

Routine

Try to maintain your regular routine when you arrive at your destination. Walk and feed your dog at the same time each day. Routine is especially important to dogs and will help the both of you adjust quicker.
